“The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified” (Matthew 28:5).

Let us listen to the angel’s sermon. It is a spiritual thing. “Do not be afraid” –this is the very genius of our risen Savior’s gospel. You who would be saved, you who follow Christ, you need not fear. There are no terrors in heaven or earth for the child of God who comes to Jesus’ cross and trusts his soul to Him who bled thereon. Is it the dark that alarms you? Fear not: God sees and loves you in the dark, and there is nothing in the dark or light beyond His control. Are you afraid to come to the tomb? Does the grave alarm you? Fear not: you cannot die. Since Christ has risen, though you were dead, yet will you live. Oh, the comfort of the gospel! There is nothing in the Bible to make any man fear who puts his trust in Jesus. There is nothing in the Bible, nothing in heaven, nothing on earth, nothing in hell, that need make you fear who trust in Jesus. “Do not be afraid.” The past you need not fear, for it is forgiven. The present you need not fear for it is provided for. The future is also secured by the living power of Jesus. “Because I live, you also will live” (John 14:19). Fear! How can it remain when Christ is risen from the dead? Do you fear your sins? They are all gone, for Christ had not risen if He had not put them all away. If every wound of the risen Savior and every act of your reining Lord consoles you, why will you fear? Jesus will help you in all your temptations; seeing He ever lives to make intercession for you. He is able to save you to the uttermost. Therefore, do not fear.
