“On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
“What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”
He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’” (Luke 10:25-27).

In this passage we see that a lawyer put Jesus on the “stand,” asking Him what was the most important commandment. This question is asking: “what’s the Lord’s highest priority?” Turns out His highest priority is love. It’s who He is, not simply something He does (1 John 4:8).

If it weren’t for other people, I think we would have a much easier time “abiding in His love,” as we are told to do in John 15. How do we stay in the place of love, especially when people can be so aggravating, biting and clawing for one-another’s approval and appreciation? How do we operate in His love? The answer: we must first know, deep down in the darkest parts of our heart, that we are loved by our heavenly Papa. As we grow in revelation about the unsearchable dimensions of His love for us, we become a fountain of that same love because we are constantly drinking from His source. Insecurity, fear and competition will dissolve in the ocean of His acceptance.

We cannot loathe ourselves and expect to then “love others like we love ourselves” in the way Jesus intended. We are free to love ourselves when we discover how cherished we are, and how much our Father gave to bring us near to Him.

Don’t be hesitant to ask Him to take you deeper in His love, every day. It’s His highest priority!
