“Thus says the Lord who made it, the Lord who formed it to establish it (the Lord is His name): ‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know’” (Jeremiah 33: 2-3).

Eugene Peterson tells us, “The Bible makes it clear that every time there is a story of faith, it is completely original. God’s creative genius is endless. Each life is a fresh canvas on which he uses lines and colors, shades and lights, textures and proportions that he has never used before.” What a marvelous thought! We may look like our relatives, and we may have similar experiences to other people. But each of us is genuinely unique, and our spiritual journeys are full of twists and turns and opportunities different from all others.

This becomes especially apparent when we embrace a sense of expectation as we respond to God’s call. Our stories of faith may seem ordinary. Yet to those who love us and depend on us, our stories are unique and powerful. When we look back of what has become of our dreams and faith, we see God’s originality. These days, when we can view videos of the striking intricacies and overwhelming grandeur of God’s ever-surprising creation, we rejoice that the Creator made us! He not only made each of us, but he will also shape each of our unique stories as we invite him to change us. Though we may feel as if we are painfully ordinary and our stories drab and uninspiring, if we will respond to God’s call, he will thrust us into the adventure of spiritual battles.

In Run with the Horses, Peterson declares that we can live zestful lives “that spill out of the stereotyped containers that a sin-inhabited society provides. Such lives fuse spontaneity and purpose and green the desiccated landscape with meaning. And we see how it is possible: by plunging into a life of faith, participating in what God initiates in each life.”
