“’Don’t be afraid,’ the prophet answered. ‘Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’ And Elisha prayed, ‘Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.’ Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha” (2 Kings 6:16-17).
One morning, Elisha and his servant were surrounded by an enemy army with its horses and chariots. Having seen the odds against them, his servant man, who apparently had only earthly vision, freaked out, asking Elisha, “What will we do?” The prophet seemed rather calm with his reply of, “Don’t worry. Our army is bigger than theirs.” Then he prayed that God would open his servant’s eyes so he could see just how well protected he and Elisha were. God honored Elisha’s request and the scales from the servant’s spiritual eyes fell away, revealing a mountain full of charioted cavalry.
When we open our eyes of faith, the shadows of this world shrink away and fear abates. The more we understand the absolute and awesome power of our God, the better our spiritual vision and the less terror this world holds for us. With the fading of the darkness of worry, dread and anxiety, comes the Son’s brilliant light of peace, faith and serenity. Throw open the shades; let the Son light in so you may see with spiritual eyes.
